Rain washes out cricket carnival, new date to be decided

Heavy rain over the weekend caused the cancellation of the Sri Lanka Sports Association’s Carnival of Cricket 2024 on Sunday, April 21.

Fourteen teams were scheduled to take part in two tournament divisions but the matches were called off without a ball being bowled at Kianawah Park, Tingalpa.

SLSAQ president Sunil Gooneratne said the decision to call off the event was made early on Sunday. He said the match committee would meet soon to plan a new carnival date later this year.

One silver lining on a wet day was the community support for Thilani caterers who were in danger of being left high and dry and incurring a sizeable loss without the sale of 121 food parcels.

Sunil said they worked quickly to help with the disposal of the meals.

“I decided to bring them to my house and with help from Nalaka, Iyan, Sandeep, Saminda, Laksitha and Gerry, we contacted all our friends and cricketers and managed to sell the food in two hours,” he said.

Thilani was grateful and praised the SLSAQ’s commitment to help her out.

“Thank you all as a team and we are very proud to serve a community business in need,” Sunil said.
